Why Change is necessary for your Small Business to Grow

2013 has barely begun but has brought with it so much change. People selling their businesses, people starting new ones, friends quitting work, friends starting new ones. There seems to be so much growth and new beginnings.

You may be sitting in the same job that you were last year, doing the same thing. You may look at all the change around you and feel stuck. I love to see all the change that is happening around me. It seems that there really is a desire to do and be better. To not merely work, but to do something that you are really passionate about or to become really passionate about what you do.

I too feel like I am at a crossroads, a point of change and growth. When you are passionate about what you do, it stops feeling like a chore and the days fly by. When it starts to feel like a chore, it is time to re-evaluate the situation. This does not mean that there will not be days when you are tired or frustrated but on the most part you will feel fulfilled and motivated.

Why change is necessary

Albert Einstein said Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Are you on the edge of Insanity? Successful people, and businesses, recognise the need for change early. They embrace it and because of this, they are also usually quick to see when something is not working and they are not afraid to change.

For most of us change is not a comfortable thing but what we do know is that change is inevitable. That leaves us with two choices. We can either let change happen to us or make changes happen.

When change is necessary

When is change necessary for you and/or your business? If you have a number of months of information showing that you are not on track to reach your goals, if you find yourself complaining about the same problem three times (or more), if you are presented with a better idea or system that you know will benefit your business then it is time for change.

Although making unnecessary changes can be the detrimental for successful businesses, not recognising when it is time to make necessary changes can be just as deadly. Market research shouldn’t stop when you finish your business plan and launch your business – that’s when it should start in earnest. Research, analyse, and act – these are the basics, the bones, of a successful business model.
